About Typy.io
A free multiplayer typing game that runs in your browser. Type faster and more accurately than five other players to take over a board of keycaps.
How a round works
- Type a name and press Play. You drop straight into a live room. There is no lobby and no account. Bots keep the seats warm and hand them over as real players arrive.
- You start in a corner with a key and its neighbours. Every key on the board carries a word.
- Type the word on any raised key that touches your territory and it becomes yours. The word is accepted the moment the last letter lands. No Enter needed.
- Empty keys carry short words, three or four letters. Keys another player holds carry longer words, five to seven letters. Expanding is cheap and attacking costs more, so where you type is a choice, not just how fast.
- Lose your last key and you are out for the round. Hold the most keys when the three-minute clock runs out, or be the last one standing, and you win.
The next round starts in the same room a few seconds later. The player in the lead has the longest border and therefore the most to defend, which is what keeps rounds close.
Why it is good typing practice
- Real words, not letter salad. Every key shows an ordinary English word, so you practise the letter combinations that actually appear in writing.
- Accuracy matters more than raw speed. A wrong letter bounces the word and you lose the time. Rushing costs tiles, so the game quietly rewards clean typing over frantic typing.
- You read ahead while you type. Choosing which key to take next trains the glance-ahead habit that separates fast typists from people who hunt one word at a time.
- Short rounds. Three minutes is long enough to settle into a rhythm and short enough to fit a break between tasks.
- Any keyboard works. Desktop, laptop, or the on-screen keyboard on a phone or tablet. The board lays itself out around the keyboard so the typing box is always visible.
- Progress you can see. Your all-time wins are counted and the top typists appear on the start screen.
Two ways to type
By default a wrong letter is rejected with a shake, which keeps beginners honest. The Type through mistakes setting lets wrong letters stay in the box so you can backspace them, which is closer to how a real document behaves. Switch between them with the gear button on the start screen.
For classrooms and groups
Nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. Press Invite friends during a game to copy a link that puts everyone who opens it in the same room, so a class or a team can play one round together. Names are screened for profanity on the server, and there is no chat.
